Gloria's Knee :: My OA Story

I was no stranger to knee pain. In 1985, I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee. Then, in 2006, I had it totally replaced. But the right knee had been hurting, too, for quite some time. It hurt going up and down stairs. I couldn’t stand on it for more than a few minutes, and I couldn’t keep it bent without unbearable pain. I used to do all those disco moves, where I went down to the floor and back up—all while wearing 3-inch heels. My doctor told me that’s more than my knees should take. I guess you could say I gave my knees to disco.

My primary care physician sent me to see an orthopedic surgeon for the increasing pain in my right knee. He diagnosed me with osteoarthritis of the knee. I was shocked. I thought arthritis happens only to older people—I was only 41!
